Helicopter Throwdown

“Damn Denver 4 years later and you’re still feeling this dubstep shit?!”  As Helicopter Showdown’s Josh Small mixed in the drop the only answer the crowd could give was a “Fuck yeah!” and a roaring round of applause. Beta Night Club on a Friday night has become somewhat of a staple over the last few years in Denver.  Sub.Mission Dubstep has been bringing Bassic Fridays for a while now and although this is not the first time Helicopter Showdown has come to The Mile High city, it was definitely one of the most fun.

To say that Friday night was great is an understatement but in order to give details on the night you have to start from the beginning. We all walked in and standing at the decks was the always lovely Lotus Drops. This Bay Area Bass Queen has been smashing up sets from Chicago to Hawaii to up and down the west coast and lately has been seen destroying clubs all over Colorado. She caught us by surprise on Friday night as we walked in and caught her dropping bass heavy classics mixed in with unreleased dubplates.  I must say that it is always a pleasure to catch her sets. They’re always fun and have the perfect mix of deep whomp and a bass heavy wobble.  Next up was the one and only Coult-45. Over the last few years this Colorado native has made a name for himself as one of THE premier Sub.Mission residents. What many love about Coult’s style is that it’s so diverse. From deep bass filled dubstep to trap to drum & bass he does what every great DJ does, takes you on a journey and always keeps you guessing what’s next. Lotus DropsIMG_20130927_230344

As Josh Small started his set the Funktion-One’s vibrated the chest cavities of every bass head in the building. I must say that when the first bass dropped people went nuts. Although Helicopter Showdown usually performs as a group, seeing them individually truly makes you appreciate the talent of these men. Each has their own unique style and, like many great groups, when those styles come together something amazing happens. Josh Small’s style was perfect for Denver. From dubstep to trap to moombah to electro to drum & bass and everything in between Josh’s set was absolutely out of control. He said it himself, “Denver you’re my favorite city to play because no matter what I drop you fucking get down.”  Believe me, when I say that Denver came out full force ready to show Helicopter Showdown that we can get down to any track you throw at us.  “I catch them every time they come to town.” A club goer said as we were leaving. I for one can say that I will be at their next performance when they come back to Colorado.
